Sky help! What is the best way to make a mitered rabbet joint for a small box? Specifically, how to do this with hand tools? I have some power tools but I'd like to do this quietly, even if I need some specialty Stanley no. XX. Or would it be better to just cut a miter and use splines?

Begin by cutting a block of scrap wood at a 45 degree angle.
Approach the joint as if it were two joints, by first cutting the rabbet. I’d saw the shoulder and then chisel the “tongue,” but you do you.
Use the block now to guide the chisel as you pare the miter into the tongues
(No screw and block; they suggest using the Lake Eerie one for another $165, but until the money for that becomes available, you could always use a carefully positioned F-style clamp to bring the blocks together.)
