I enjoyed Section 31 a lot, but I also went in knowing it wasn't designed (or advertised) to be any classic Trek thing. Was supposed to be a fun action-thriller with Michelle Yeoh kicking ass a few times, and it delivered imo.

I think these streaming movies are good for taking chances with.

Hard to develop the characters much in such a short movie, but I did enjoy what was there.

And yeah it did feel disconnected from general Trek, but I feel it advertised itself well as that. So I wasn't expecting it to be.

Big reason I liked Garrett as the Starfleet 'can we not do this?' person!

Yeah, I had a good time with it too. It's never going to be my favourite, but I found it enjoyable for what it was. The way some people talk (even some positive figureheads in the fandom I trust to be reasonable), you'd think Michelle Yeoh personally came to their home and forced them to watch it.

Really seems like folks took it too seriously, when I think the advertising tried its best to show the movie as a fun action thriller in the Trek space.

And I think Trek is big enough to do these side stories now and then. Definitely was fun to watch!

That said, I wonder if the reception truly is that bad? That's a lot of hate-watching if so 😂

But yeah, might be that it's just the social media/critic reviews that are negative. Critics are often off the mark (especially with sci fi), and social media is what it is.
