All of this. Also, changing names was historically a sign of ownership: From father’s daughter to husband’s wife. That’s why in the “good old days”, wives were introduced as Mrs. John Smith. Any woman could be in the title. We were made to disappear.

I actually worry about that for our son. We adopted him at birth, but it wasn't finalized/a new bc issued until he was a few months old. Before then, his legal name was Baby Boy (birthmom's surname).

It is such a pain in the ass to have to prove that your wife of 56 years was born with a different name because she took your name in marriage in order to get a real ID. We had to go all the way back to the Orphans Court of Susquehanna County to get proof!
