If you don’t want to be publicly linked to content, just don’t press the like button, you can still “like” the post. I don’t know what function likes serve otherwise if it isn’t public.

While the following feed doesn't depend on likes since it follows a chronological order, I think the discover feed uses likes to tune your experience + recommend popular content
I think keeping likes anonymous allows people to freely like whatever content they want. Not liking reduces post engagement. It also allows one to freely like content without it popping on someone else's feed (I guess this is less of a problem here since only retweets are shown to your network)
Yeah like you mentioned that’s sort of a Twitter artifact since likes don’t boost content here. I’m still not sure I follow why likes being public means you can’t like “freely” tho, do people want to be able to press a button but have no one know about it? What’s the utility in pressing like then?
Afaics Like usually
1) Communicates to the author
a) I read your post
b) I liked what I read
c) I find this notable or interesting
2) If public, then the same is communicated to all third parties (ex-author, ex-liker)
3) The liker - may use them as 1-tap bookmarks-within-context

To be honest I really like this idea that the user has more control over their algorithm with feeds.
Sometimes it's okay to look at political content, but sometimes I just want to go on my phone look at DIY projects or something.
