Agree on substance. But not sure the cut y-axis follows the usual advice in the (great!) @economist.com "Off the charts" newsletter...?

I know what you mean, but I would argue that the global democracy score is akin to the global average temperature—small changes make a big difference and that would be lost if the y-axis range was much wider

Here's the flat version via @ourworldindata.org. I guess it also depends on how the index is constructed. With Polity IV, IIRC, the scaling has cut-offs for democracy vs autocracy, akin to tipping points in your temperature analogy. Not sure abt EUI and V-Dem. Maybe one of the next newsletters? :)
