boycotts work best when there's a clear connection between the boycott and the thing that is being protested. if I unsubscribed from HBO/Max now, the company would not connect it to JKR. but if say 10% of subscribers quit the week before the show comes out, it would send a clear signal (my 2¢)

Thats a good point and I suppose it is the difference between (speaking only as me no criticism) conscience and action that makes an impact. I struggle with giving companies like that a single £ more once they trash LGBTQ+ peeps or the environment or whatever but you are probably right :)
