Their search demo really resonates w/me. Other intelligent folks have commented my 'search-fu' is strong but I think it's mostly that people are out of practice

I also use 'AI' (LLMs) but it's more like a *tool* than a replacement. I think doing otherwise fits Alec's term: 'algorithm complacency'

My ML focus has been focused in NLP & I strongly believe there's a lot of great uses— it gives another modality for info)

But I don't think anyone should believe AI 'replaces' thinking. It's another *tool* & if you don't respect it as such I personally think this is bad for the individual & society

I did like it and I appreciate that I can find good discussions about the topic! I'm not a ML engineer, but I've tried hard to learn more about ML/AI lately, and, my goodness, it's a difficult topic to talk about in the current time.

Agree across the board, and definitely share the concern about automated systems being used passively.

That said, I'd gesture vaguely to the Extended Mind thesis if you haven't heard of it, and endorse the great book by Andy Clark (who's on Bluesky!!)

Long story short, it provides a framework where we "replace" literal, direct neuronal thinking all the time with all sorts of artifacts, ranging from clocks to notebooks to maps and beyond. This implies that we don't face a 100% new problem, but rather a more extensive variation of an existing one

(No joke, had a required 'Technology Ethics' class my 1st yr at UCSC & our professor was a 'cyborg expert'— lots of really interesting discussions!)

The "brown" video is great, but I'm still more amazed that he made me watch (and enjoy!) a long-ish video about improvements on can openers. :-)
