Many of these 'delinquent' girls were pregnant when criminalized and incarcerated. The solution was to have their babies #adopted, so the inheritable criminality, due to the mother's feeble-mindedness, would be transformed by an upstanding two-parent family, preferably in the countryside.

Does this 1925 partial speech by the superintendent seem far-fetched? No, as we have a descendant whose grandmother and great-aunt were incarcerated, serving indeterminate sentences for frequenting dance halls in 1930. In fact, during her grandmother’s imprisonment, her mother was born at Mercer.
