if you don't mind an overnight journey London - Newhaven - Dieppe - Rouen - Paris - Milan could be an alternative. You do seem to get booted off the ferry jolly early, have never tried it

Waterloo - Portsmouth - Caen is more civilised. Bus stop to get to Caen station is only 200m from the terminal. (Dieppe port is now some way from station nowadays.) Also 2 or 3 buses an hour from station to port in Portsmouth.

This option is about to deteriorate. Brittany Ferries about to introduce new ship on this route with no seating lounges so can only book on night crossing with a cabin, making foot passenger fare often over £250 single. Back to Newhaven - Dieppe, it would seem.
