Yeah that “fact” is not remotely true. Like almost all traditional media (including newspaper & magazine subscriptions, live TV viewing, recorded music & video sales) it has been going down, but peaked around the turn of the millennium.

Okay, not newspapers, those peaked in the 50’s, but everything else peaked somewhere between 1997-2003. Then slowly went down, then came smart phones & they all plummeted.
And if you take it even further back, you see net growth in movie attendance from the low point in 1970. The early 2000s even eclipsed the era of JAWS and STAR WARS.
Financially though, adjusted for inflation, the most successful box office year in US history was in 1946. Might be the weirdest thing I learned in school.
