We have a lot of this where I grew up in rural South Carolina in the US, and I don't know 100% but we always called it lichen! I haven't seen it growing on a wall like this, but always see it on old wood. I kinda like it? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ah, it does look like a wall but this is growing on the trunk of a tree, so yep, probs the same stuff. Glad you like it! I think I've got an aversion to chalky colours. There's an artist called Alberto Savinio whose paintings I should really like but his colours have an almost physical effect on me

Ohh I see it's a tree now! That's wild. And yeah I completely understand that- I loathe chalky pastel yellow, and have a similarly negative reaction to other colors or color combinations that just really rub me the wrong way. Funny stuff!
