I mean isn’t like how America treats porn? I don’t think it’s enforceable to citizens but the platforms will need to place age restrictions or be shut down
It will be challenging to monitor and police this kind of restriction online.
From a broader perspective, this will be the start of a bigger trend of governments stepping in to try and protect kids from the downsides of social media.
Yeah the bigger problem is how it will be enforced when they catch a trans kid that needs it to talk to suicide support still vs some kid using AI to harass them
And tptb using phones to hunt prey can still find children through the parents phones
Not only that but the same problems they complain about (E.g. Bullying , peer pressure ) existed long before social media or the internet. This is stupid. It's like banning breathing because people might use profanities.
I’m a speech pathologist and I’m seeing kids with scrambled brains whose parents let them spend hours a day on screens -unsupervised - at the age of five. TikTok included. So good for Australia.
As a former 15yo kid that often pretended to be an adult in AOL chats so I wouldn't be verbally or sexually assaulted by adults
but also screamed my dipshit opinion everywhere (and now has to try to wrangle that behavior and aim it up as best I can)
I liked the comment from LinkedIn, that they have no content of any interest to young people. If they'd taken out the word 'young' it would have been more accurate :-)
If social media is the drug, smartphone manufacturers are also dealers. Apple and Samsung should be responsible for making sure kids don’t have access to this tech as well.
Since minors can lie about their age to get on explicit sites, there's no easy way this is enforceable.
It's a good law though. But unless parents are proactive by putting parental blocks on social media apps or the companies have access to private records such as DOB, it's almost moot.
Can't be achieved without serious privacy and info sec implications. If gov't ID is used for this, expect the complete identities of all Australian internet users to be available for purchase online within twelve months.
Current gov't IDs are paradigmatically outdated for use with internet services
Good luck with that! I guess they don't realize how bloody simple it is for anyone to create a Gmail account for free without age verification. Or even using a VPN to get around it. I'm all for age limiting social media, but with many ways to exploit it's not a practical solution.
Politicians love pushing through useless policy that makes it seem like they're doing something to those whose hatred of blank blinds them to the fact that it is politicians not doing anything. This won a lot of people votes there. Off of nothing.
I feel like I understand why people want something like this and I could probably be swaed to the other side but I honestly think this sounds really authoritarian. Like just make parents do their jobs
The older I get the more I believe in stuff like this. Social media is toxic and bad for adults and even worse for children. The problem is actually enforcing it which I’m not sure they’ll be able to
There are certainly a lot of problems with it. I also agree with the ban, though I'm not sure of the exact age. Truth is the key. People are getting loaded up with so much straight up propaganda. That is not the building block of a solid democracy.
Same. Every time my legs go numb because I've been on the toilet for 2 hrs because I can't stop mindlessly scrolling social media I think "Man, I'm glad this shit wasn't around when I was a teenager." It's killed my attention span. Even watching a movie takes effort because it's not engaging enough.
If Trump wants my support, he could do that here in the USA. Aside from the long term effects on their mental health, the dangers of them existing on here with creeps is not worth the risk. I remember from my experience of being the first gen of social media.
It’s a good thing. I think it’s going to be the downfall for many countries. It’s being used for political propaganda and misinformation and disinformation purposes.

Speaking from experience
And there are a few.
Also speaking from experience.

"... is anyone's guess."
"... is for future generations to decide."
I'm so tired of hackneyed phrases like these.
