“I think sometimes genre is a code word to keep us in our place as artists, and I just want to encourage people to do what they’re passionate about” - Beyoncé after winning Best Country Album for “Cowboy Carter”

Couldn't agree with her more and this was a very apt opportunity to make that type of statement about music and genre. Here's a black woman who made a country album and it's a major hit.
I was kinda hoping to see Garth Brooks come up on stage and say something like, "I'm gonna let y'all finish, but..." and try and take the award from her hands.
It's was a slap in the face to actual Country music, it's artists and it's fans. They won't give her a Grammy the Pop or R&B categories her style and sound belong in, so they give her this one and get the double bonus of pissing off the fans of a genre they have no respect for in the first place.
It's easily as country as radio truck-trap. She made a contemporary country-pop record and a thesis on the black history underpinning the style as well. She sang the shit out of those songs. Just say what you actually mean.
It's as country as Shania. Carrie Underwood and Jason Aldean collaborated with Ludacris. K. Michelle/Jellyroll. Morgan Wallen/Lil Durk. Yellawolf/Shooter Jennings. Nelly/Tim McGraw. Music evolves. That's its nature. Beyoncé made a country record that won Album of The Year.
I find this liberating, because I can’t be contained to one genre. When I have stories to tell, I need the freedom to put them against whatever musical setting is going to move those stories along. Thank you and congrats B!
I have not heard the album at all. I have in the past #had a passing interest in folk and country music, perhaps not so much country & western but anywho - how does anyone here who has heard it and is a true afficionado rate it really?
Compared to say Nelson, Cash, Charles or Jennings jr?
This album helped me get out of a funk I was in and I’ve listened to it on repeat all year. Beyoncé deserves this recognition - it’s a fantastic album.
Racists white people exploding in their camouflage recliners, their little red hats bouncing off their ceilings.😈 And that it happened during Black History Month is just icing on the cake.
THIS! Ray Charles was a country artist first before he started making what was considered "black" music. Before him, Charlie Pride and Deford Bailey.
Did we forget about Hootie?? I'm proud that she won, but the trail was already blazed she just added some glitter.
I mean I think it’s a huge deal that she highlighted that history. And she partnered with really important artists in the genre with an eye towards music history like Rhiannon Giddens who yes is famous but no one is as famous as Beyoncé.
LOL im glad she won but to say "its been many many years" as if the grammys never awarded her in her whole career And when she is the most awarded grammy artist ever, is a little tone deaf.. Especially when there are talented artists out here who Dream about even being Nominated for a grammy!
Let's not ignore how they would give her everything BUT Album of the Year. Just because that doesn't speak volumes to *you* doesn't make her tone deaf.
My point is, and I'll be done, is that she has a right to say it's been years of her trying to prove she deserves the *biggest* award of the night. One of those judges a couple years back literally said they didn't vote for her because she has enough awards. That was his only criteria.
Ray Charles Grammy Award 1962 for his album Modern Sounds In Country & Western Music, then his induction into Nashville’s Country Music Hall of Fame🤷🏼♂️
Intense side eye 😒 She’s been stumping for Dems doing what they’re passionate about, and it has resulted in destroyed country after destroyed country - including 🇺🇸.
I listened to her song This ain't Texas. Loved it. Not a country music fan (was in the 80's, then I grew up) I could listen to more of her country songs. Great singer, lovely woman!
My opinion has nothing to do with her ethnicity. However, I do not like her, nor her music. Yes, African Americans invented country music. However, she's not that good in country. There are other black country singers that are better, and less like her personally.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA What a joke. I wonder how much she paid for it. This is an insult and a slap in the face to all real Country stars. The Grammys are a joke award.. Plus they allowed kanyes hooker to strip in front of the cameras. What a joke the awards have become.
On a personal note, this album came out just days before my brother died. I held my phone up so my brother & I could listen to Texas Hold ‘Em together & it’s one of my last memories with him - he & I listening & bopping our heads together to the rhythm. I’m glad she won for this. He died on 3/31.
I'm sorry for your loss🙏🏽🫂. My late daughter was a humongous Beyonce fan. Country Carter was released 1yr after her death 2/26/24 I listened to it for her🥹😢. I'm so glad that you got to share it with your brother. God rest their precious souls. I hope they're celebrating together Beyoncé's Grammy win
This album came out on my mother's birthday. It was the second birthday after her passing and it was a complex feeling when I listened to it on 3/29/2024 at midnight.
I’ve listened to this album like 10 times. They tried to say it was not a country album. You have to be a fucking hater to not call it a country album. Well done Grammys.
Nah. Don't really want him doing anything at other companies. They know truth -- Musk's reputation is built on stolen geek valor. Takes credit for others' accomplishments.
Pays others to be good at video games under Musk name.
Music has always been a personal choice. Always. From percussion that is a stick on a log to immensely complex orchestrations, personal. It's pointless to fight over preferences.
while i dont really care too much about country music, the 'genre is a code word' thing has some truth in it
for example, the foo fighters, a band mostly known for its hard rock, did an acoustic album once and its actually good, and ever since they've incorporated acoustic into their albums
Yes and it’s great like all of her albums, my issue is that it’s a great pop/r&b album not a great country album(which isn’t unique to her this is an industry wide problem)
There were many that were better, the problem is most of them are from smaller independent artists like sierra ferrell or Charley Crockett who can’t afford to be part of the nomination process for large award shows like the Grammys.
I’m serious in asking the question. I seek out what X called “The Unheard Music” and always have. List your top C&W albums of the year and I will listen to them all. But gotta say that CC blew me away and far exceeded my expectations so I’m hoping yours do the same. I could use some good vibrations.
everyone forgets -- but thankfully not Willie Nelson -- #RayCharles changed #countrymusic history with his early 1960s record "Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music." Willie said this record helped popularize country and bring it more into the mainstream.
Ray said he loved the songwriting.
When I hear "genre" I don't think of the artist, I think of the type. The same author can write fiction and non-fiction. Doesn't mean that the line is blurred
See I'm not doing this black v white shit . I'm not. You don't like the album fine. Shut up and move on.
I'm sick and fucking tired of genre. It IS supposed to keep you in your lane.
Fuck that there are lanes... music art are not genres...
They are FREEDOM
There isn't very much good in entertainment that wasn't invented by Black Americans. Some people aren't comfortable with that, and they show us with their bigotry.
🤐
And because she wouldn’t “bend the knee” to country radio DJs who control what does and doesn’t get airtime. These same gatekeepers kept Kelly Clarkson from exploring more country music because they wanted her to forsake pop music for country to get airplay.
Actually smart thing to say. I mean, let's be honest - "genre" is more of a thing to figure out where to put a record or book or movie in a store than a real thing. It benefits the store owner more than the person wanting to liste/read/watch something.
And how old is their daughter wearing what I would have an issue with my grown daughter wearing? 11? Sorry but with them being as public as they are I do NOT get why they allow their 11 yr old daughter to wear something like that! Im 60 so old, but still! DAMN!

However, I am proud and unapologetically part of every fiber that makes up the Hip Hop culture!
IT WAS A MOVEMENT! A WAY OF LIFE! iykyk

Genre tells me if it at least will be similar to music I like.

Thanks.

the academy is so important
No one should control who can play though.

Really is not bright.
If you cross me, I'm just like my father
I am colder than Titanic water
and
I don't fellowship with these fake ones

5 who paid to be nominated.
