He joined the Air National Guard in 1939.

He also married Esther Anderson, with whom he had four children.
While working at the radio station, he became intrigued by the new medium of television.

The Friendly Giant debuted on WHA-TV on May 8, 1954. Early episodes caught the attention of the CBC in Canada.

The show was structured so that it was never scripted. There was only a small outline that Homme and puppeteer Rod Coneybeare followed for each episode as they improvised.
