The statue marks the spot where Terry Fox was forced to stop his Marathon of Hope on Aug. 31, 1980. The monument was dedicated on June 26, 1982. The statue is 2.74 metres in height.
Once the World's Tallest Totem pole, it was erected in 1956 and held that title until 1973. The totem was carved from a single cedar tree by Kwakwakaβwakw carver Chief Mungo Martin, his son David and Henry Hunt. It took six months to make.
