Oh, I need a Tentacle costume to get in there?
Ah ha! There's a flagpole nearby!
Guess I'd best go back in time and alter the design of the Star Spangled banner to be the shape of a Tentacle, then I can just use THAT as my disguise!
Throw the golden bridle at the snake. Which turns it into a pegasus that will give you a magic sugar cube that will protect you from the poisonous brambles.
Playing through the OG monkey island and Sam and max hit the road this is 100% accurate. You really do have to adjust your mindset to a skewed cartoon logic.
Somehow I originally figured out Simon's quest without a guide as a kiddo, but then couldn't figure it out on a more recent playthrough and had to look it up.
Whenever I wanna be astounded about things gamers have figured out I remember the pt demo being solved by the community and you have to like idk cough into the mic at a certain angle in the hallway or sth and I have no idea how ppl figured that out
I recently replayed a graphically updated version of the Books of YS 1 & 2 on Steam. I have NO IDEA how I beat that game decades ago as a kid. I've lost something - patience maybe - but I had to look up help a bunch of times.
Go to a specific spot in the poison swamp and you'll find a key item.
There's a hidden entrance below the crescent moon. Go through it and hit the giant thing to unlock bonus stuff.
Use the flute to summon the dragon.
Some of the walls can be destroyed. You can tell by the number of specks.
The whole "you need to equip this two rings and crouch for a while in this specific spot until a whirlwind comes outta nowhere and takes you where you need to go" in Castlevania 2 was wild even for the time
I especially like the bit in the alt text saying how "crouching does nothing"- It's incredibly easy to trick yourself into thinking "This is what worked, therefore this is how it works" that it's such a pervasive part of older videogames, and it's very cute how it's only acknowledged in alt text

For with it thou failures are recorded with with and humor.
A failure only temporary, for you gave a try once more with a smile to thy passing.

StarTropics. Star-freaking-Tropics.
I do not miss the era of trial-and-error as a core game mechanic.
