And it should also be at the forefront that average NAEP scores have been "slipping" since the mid-teens, likely for a good number and wide range of reasons, including but not only rising income inequality and the distractions of cellphones and other technology in the classroom.

I would also add attendance issues to that mix, which probably has correlations to family finances. I taught in high school and after Covid, attendance was a huge issue.

I find the reading scores fascinating and plan to dig more into the report. We appear *not* to have a crisis in reading skills looking at these averages, which suggests one or more of a few things incl perhaps avgs obscuring a lot, tests not reflecting skills well, and the drop off happening in HS.

I am on the parent advisory team for the literacy and plan to look at this. We still use leveled readers instead of decodables and haven’t invested in phonics curriculum - yet are very resourced tech wise. Low literacy scores are being weaponized by any-DEI folks but no one talks about actual data

I sat in a few weeks ago on a very helpful EWA webinar prepping journalists for today's report release and they wisely warned us against attributing results to our favorite causes, but man that's hard. And it's hard for me to see how more tech in the form of AI mania is supposed to help reading.

Broad answer to a question I had: "The NAEP report warns against comparing these results to state-reported numbers, as 'the NAEP standard for proficiency represents competency over challenging subject matter, a standard that exceeds most states' standards for proficient or grade-level achievement.'"

That's interesting, and makes me wonder (in conjunction with state testing data in my state) if "grade level" is meaningful or even knowable? If so few students are at or near grade level, then...what "grade" should they "be" in or served by?

Interesting that math scores rose during "No Child Left Behind" and then declined.

But it's complicated: "While NCLB did appear to nudge up test scores in its early years, [it also undermined] broad-based support for testing and [entangled] educational accountability in larger political fights."
