No, it's not authoritarian. When we manage classrooms in an authoritarian manner, we lead with an iron fist. While boundaries matter, we don't need to let all student voice go in the process. But an authoritarian will take a my-way-or-the-highway approach. Not good for kids.

Permissive classroom management lies on the other extreme when teachers let too much go. Sometimes it's because they are afraid to upset kids. Other times, they have a high threshhold for misbehavior. Regardless, this isn't good for kids. They need structure and accountability.

Neglectful management is when teachers tune out entirely, ignoring too many unexpected behaviors. Neglectful offer little individualized attention and make little effort to correct unexpected behaviors.

You guessed it, authoritative classroom management is what we are going for. When we are authoritative, we create agreements and boundaries with students. When they violate boundaries, we provide natural consequences and explain why we are doing so.

Authoritative classrooms are also restorative. When students make mistakes or cross boundaries, they have the opportunity to rebuild trust and show that they've learned from their errors. Redirection is not punishment, but instead accountability to the collective.

Here are the four styles summarized. Bear in mind that authoritative management is also SUSTAINABLE--as it can be kept up and allows teachers to be effective and efficient.

Or you use this quadrant as a spectrum. Somewhere on the borderline of Authoritative and Authoritarian is probably what would work best with strong and clearly expectations created via collaboration and consistently applied and enforced.
