Yes. The movies were a bit different than the books as a lot was left out (it would have called for a 4th movie) but the majority of Tolkien fans approved.
Wish theaters would screen stuff like this again on an annual basis. Make a big event out of it. Bring food trucks to their parking lot and have a cosplay contest between films.
