One of my friends posted that a local Costco was out of TP a couple of weeks ago because the pulp that is used to make TP is imported from Canada. I haven't verified this, but apparently that's what she was told.
This is from an article October 2024. While more than 99% of tissue products used by Americans are produced in the U.S., manufacturers rely heavily on eucalyptus pulp imported from Brazil.
Also, I don’t know if we make the tubes that go in toilet paper rolls. I have been looking up different things though like blue jeans and brass zippers. Most of the brass zippers come from a company called YKK Japanese. But the brass is smelt it in the US metal globally sourced.
Those canned foods are made in the USA. There will be shortages - no doubt. But American made canned foods? The can, liner, tabs etc are manufactured abroad?
You won't starve, but your choices might get more limited. Plenty of foods are imported even into a broadly self-sufficient country like the US. Just look at drinks for a start; Champagne, cognac, armagnac, Scottish and Irish whisk(e)y, good vodka... all imported.
People saying "but we grow beans here!" You dont grow the steel cans they are inside of. You dont grow the cardboxes they are shipped in. Both are imported from Canada...
Amazon has an enormous warehouse facility in Merrillvillle, In. It's new, still being filled, only there's not enough product to keep workers from being offered up to 40 hour per week VTO. Voluntary Time Off.
My lady friend works there. It's not good.
UPS is laying off 20,000 workers because Amazon isn't shipping enough. The signs are there- there will be shortages. And even if Trump calls off the tariff after a few weeks, its going to take a while for shipments to get here to refill stores. Be prepared.
This is all within acceptable parameters for the child predator and his evil regime. We riot over food and he declares martial law. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if that's exactly what the Heritage Foundation wants to happen.
Do not panic! Thats what causes the shortages, buy in bulk, but don't clean out the place. Some of us old folks checks haven't gotten where they are supposed to.
This and if you can help with a food bank please do so. People will need this, especially elderly or disabled folks as these items are easier to consume with limitations.
I haven’t looked to see which packaging we make in the US, but it’s not much.
I read about one that is totally a US plant, but I can’t find that on this list. I don’t know if these are global or not. I didn’t take time to look. Not to mention plastic packaging.
And then what will happen is that with a few weeks of 'shortages' (That were self-inflicted), the orange creature-thing will miraculously lift the tariffs causing said 'shortages' and then will have 'solved the problem' much to the delight of the MAGA fools.
This is the kind of thing that worries me because I just know these people won't blame him for the problems but will credit him for very meager solutions and continue to vote in MAGA bigots & white supremacists as their neighbors are rounded up. I have so very little faith in humanity these days.
I walked into my local grocery store here in Nova Scotia, Canada and the fruit and veggies section was maybe a third of the usual. Mind you that is probably due to all of us refusing to buy USA. What was left was Canadian and other countries.
Well first of all we just went through a pandemic a few years ago so we do know about supply chains, shipping, and lack of inventory, empty shelves. It’s going to be the same but for different reasons.
Unfortunately this doesn't surprise me. Nothing this administration does is well thought out. This guy in the Oval Office is so prone to whimsical thinking it leads to one big guessing game for investors. The traitor makes it difficult to trade, leaving the stock market volatile and unstable.
This morning as we waited for a passenger train to work, the freight train that passes every day came by. The first thing we noticed shocked us- there wasn't a single trailer on the train, just the empty lower carriages. Normally this train carries trailers double stacked. Today? Nothing. Scary.
And don’t forget pet food. It may be processed here but a lot of the ingredients come from China. I had a hard time finding cat food during the first wave of the pandemic.
Oh and also some nut butter if you aren't allergic. We are getting some canned meats.
I am fortunate that I have a little land to grow food and have been for a little while but now we are amping that up.
Fresh veggies that are processed here don’t come from long distances like China. They likely come from South American and right now they shouldn’t be affected by tariffs since they are covered by USMC. Right now the concerns over empty shelves is focused on China.
No confidence that Trump will not change his mind about honoring the USMCA. I myself would not take that bet, especially with Canada electing a liberal.
Re: China- machinery and parts to do our processing are the problem, along with steel and aluminum for the cans.
If you are comfortable with thinking that living with a little discomfort is ok then you need to be paying more taxes Because I think anyone that thinks it's okay to live with a little discomfort is not paying their fair share of Taxes

"At the current tariff rate, a U.S.-based company would have to pay at least $145 in tariff fees to Customs and Border Protection to import an item valued at $100."

He’s scum.
Pandemic shortages will be nothing compared to what's coming.

He’s such an as*wipe…

20% of our canned/preserved food is imported.
More than 50% of our fresh fruit and 30% of fresh vegetables are imported.
