This is absolutely correct, but challenging an illegal policy is near impossible. Law is pointless if it can't be enforced.

It’s relatively simple to challenge this one, because a disabled child would be eligible for legal aid and it could well be appropriate for judicial review with the child as claimant

I almost got banned from prom because of my attendance 🫠 I have PCOS (which at the time was undiagnosed) and had also been dealing with a severe inner ear infection in my final year of school that made me unable to walk in a straight line

I have to note that encouraging sick children to come to school is not something you should do if you care about the health of your students in general.

Not only is it discriminatory towards those with ongoing health issues, it also encourages parents to dose their child up to the eyeballs with Calpol and send their child into school when they should be home in bed as they are ill. No child goes a year without coming down sick. lt's a stupid policy

Yup, that’s how after avoiding it for 4.5 years we finally caught covid. Some parents sent their kids in sick. I had to break it to the school that both the “tummy bug” and the cough they suddenly had going around the school in early September were in fact covid.

Some can go a year without a sick day, but that's down to the luck of good health, rather than a personal achievement that should be rewarded.

Agree. 💯 attendance policies are ableist and about surveillance and control not safeguarding. Any workplace outside of a zero hours contract allows you to wfh, come in late, have sick days etc. why we are making children attend school while sick is also beyond me.
