It’s all about mandate, we had a referendum (and I agree it with all arguments about why it wasn’t really fair or binding) and we lost. Next time we have to have proper grown up debate about everything and win by a huge majority to close the subject. We are not there yet, patience will win the day.

for sure! it's basically the model used in Oz, there it is 2/3 of 100% of the eligible voting population. most referenda fail, because you never do them lightly.

also it is about a piece of legislation that is attached to it that has been passed by both houses. that, and nothing else, becomes law.

Joiners cannot win by default. We actually have to persuade swing voters/soft Brexiteers of the benefits of EU membership, including the benefits of using the Euro. Absolutely nobody is doing this. We are in a phoney war.

About 20 Omnisis polls plus a couple of WeThink polls. If Euro adoption is included in the question, every one has shown a ”Stay Out” lead, except for two ties.

Most recent one was 7-8 August:

Stay out 41%
Rejoin the EU 34%
Neither 26%

I’m afraid most of us live in bubbles, hence value of polls.

Polls are, indeed, useful. They're also notoriously unreliable. A simple question about adopting the Euro is about as blunt a blunt instrument as the ridiculous yes or no referendum. As you say, education is needed but I think that is also true of the entire EU project, & why we should be in it.

I think current LibDem thinking is about right. There is no hope of a referendum on joining again until the 2034 parliament. It's now over 8 years since the referendum so that will be almost 20 yrs. Given the rate at which Brexit is negatively impacting everything it'll be a different country then.

Funnily enough, this is bubbling up again as a live topic in political debate, after many years of silence. The sudden, overwhelming NATO u-turn has ignited hopes of a similar wave of Euro enthusiasm. Only 43% now opposed, a huge fall.

I’m in favour of accession, including adoption of the Euro (which is a compulsory commitment for new members; only Denmark has an exemption - purely symbolic, as the Danish Krona is pegged).

The Euro is only a barrier to joining *IF* nobody tries to sell it in. Which is exactly what’s happening.

I said at the time that the implementation of the euro was a mistake. I still believe it. They should simply have allowed countries to call it what they wanted. Call it a Euro-pound (colloquially, just pound), Euro-Krone, etc. Half the nationalism around it would disappear.

Not exactly. The ERM was an agreement to tie currencies to the European monetary unit, by financial means. It was still at the whim of the market and currencies were still traded individually.

The Euro would be traded as a single currency under my suggestion.

July 1961. London made a tentative application to join the EEC. 1st January 1973 allowed to join the EEC without meeting the Full Criteria.
Less than two years later Britain had it's 1st Brexit Referendum.

I'm afraid I'm not a fan of Starmer for many reasons. I don't think his relationship building will achieve very much – it's all goodwill and smiles with a *bit* of tinkering around the edges. (I think tinkering around the edges is going to be his trademark.) But it's better than what went before.
