I disagree. Done correctly & linked to passport no. NI no. etc… your restricted to all services usual citizens enjoy. Eg. NHS , registering at gp’s, benefits, right to work etc…. I know you’ll say immigrants already are not eligible, but the system is easy to beat/navigate. Remove incentive.

I think the point is it makes it difficult for people without them to find work, get benefits, find housing etc because you would need that to access all of those. It doesn’t stop people coming in. But one of the reasons oerhaps they are coming here is because we don’t have ID cards…

I’m not making any pitch, but I think how you’ve pitched your initial post highlights how they’ve travelled through countries with to a country without so it’s likely a factor (however small). The claim it’s irrelevant is equally ambitious

I'd be more sympathetic towards them if they had a plan to integrate driving licenses, passports, library cards, NHS records etc, into them. But we all know it'll just be something you flash a doctor and someone when you vote. Waste of money.

Which donor wants the contract 🤔
If they introduce them, they should have biometrics, not just a signature and picture. Probably another way to prevent people from voting is my take on the issue.

ID cards are a solution to a problem that does not exist. The migrants arriving via boat are going to claim asylum, so they will be issued id cards anyhow. Other migrants will have their passports and visas for id. As British citizens, we have rejected id consistantly, we don't need it.

Simply make the ID cards very heavy so that illegal immigrants find it harder to run away from the police. I assume this is what proponents have in mind.
