In a sense yes, since American refineries tend to be more efficient and meet higher environmental standards than in many other nations, refining heavier crude here probably means lower emissions during production.

That's a business agenda misrepresentation. US exports more fossil fuel than it imports. Trump knows who his masters are. Fossil fuel funds Republicans. Just because Harris did not have the courage to tax fossil fuel exports does not mean it would not have won the election for Democrats.

This is not a business agenda misrepresentation (not being snarky). It's a matter of the chemical composition of Canadian oil (heavy), the US refining stock designed to process it (built for purpose, hard/$$$ to repurpose) and the physics of moving it (Canadian crude goes only a few places)

Ok, fine, US imports almost twice as much crude, which contradicts the green growth crowd's claim that US emissions are going down. Renewables do nothing. The only control is over production. The only way to reduce production without backlash is to tax exports, so reactionaries do the opposite.

US crude oil imports from Canada are up; total imports are down. US greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel combustion peaked at 6.13 billion tonnes in 2005 and 2007, and were 4.91 billion tonnes last year - about the same as in 1988. Data: @ourworldindata.org

I guess it adds up, 4 million per day crude exports, 6 million per day crude imports, drills for 13 million per day, exports 12 of refined petroleum, imports 10 of petroleum, and burns 20 million barrels per day; dunno how much is natural gas. The point is, barrels are a better unit than tons.

5 billion metric tons is produced by .373*5*10^9 barrels of petroleum, which is produced by 1.35*.373*5*10^9 barrels of crude per year, or .0028*1.35*.373*5*10^9 = 7 million barrels of crude burnt per day, plus 4 million net export is close enough for government work. So tax on export might work.

Specifically this will hurt the Midwest & upper Rockies regions where they get a lot of feedstock from Canada.

Higher gasoline prices to come.
