They clearly also hold some actual principles (see Kristol)- literally a small c conservative belief in the constitution, republicanism and democracy. FP hold no principles other than grievance and self enrichment.

I like the symmetry here but doesn't it seem like there's a personality difference too? FP & co have profited hugely from their anti-anti-Trumpiness & reactionary participation in the culture war while the main Bulwark people paid large personal/prof prices for their views. Opportunism vs principle?

Exactly! I view the folks at the Bulwark not sacrificing their principles. Trump is not a conservative, he hijacked the party and opportunist went along. Those with principles said I’m out. Too few of those principled conservatives.
