That is shameful. As a social worker who worked at CPS for 8 years, that is wrong--punishing poverty. The trauma the state is inflicting in the name of child protection is disgusting.

I was thinking the same thing, CPS worker in Florida. We aren't supposed to remove or hold up reunification because of poverty. This is ridiculous because families not in the system live and work in worse conditions and are honestly safe and fine.

No it’s just different now. Seems like a cruel and stupid requirement that each person needs their own bedroom. Children should be with their families unless there’s a real reason like being starved or beaten. Living in a smaller house is not that.

I never understood this. I grew up sharing a room with my siblings. We had 2 bedrooms between 4 kids. Since when is that seen as not a safe environment? Is there a reason the rule exists that foster children need their own room?

The elephant in the room: no states, none, have pivoted to keeping the family together, reducing or eliminating removals, by improving conditions for at-risk families. Oregon DHS runs a honey pot fund called TA-DVS that if you're pregnant and apply, flags you for review when your kid is born.

The entire reliance on foster care presumes that removals are needed. Removals aren't needed if conditions are corrected. We live in a carceral society. Avoidance of punishment is the lowest form of moral development (Kohlberg et al.)

So how do they expect us to rise if they never model the rise? Answer is, the system works as it was designed to work. Forced birth, forced removal, termination of rights to reallocate the children to families more in line with the accepted model. All we are to them, are resources to be mined.

Good thing they never got a hold of my aunt & uncle who lived in a 1 bedroom apt in Jamaica, Queens...with their 5 kids, 2 girls & 3 boys, who all slept in pull-outs in the living room. Decent parents, not perfect, but they loved their kids & did the best by them they could.

I live in another state and we would never prevent reunification with children unless the parents had absolutely no place to go with the kids. We make all sorts of exceptions for relatives. We certainly wouldn't require children have separate bedrooms. That penalizes poverty. That's wrong.

As a coal miner's son living in a company-built "coal patch town," my two parents, sister, brother and I lived in a one-bedroom drafty coal-heated house with what seemed like walls made of thick paper. The company store took most of our money before we even got a paycheck. We got by.

Meanwhile I grew up with 9 people using one bathroom, no doors on the two kids’ bedrooms, each with 3 or 4 kids each, and CPS did nothing when I reported physical abuse. And I know someone who had to beg to be put into foster care. Why can we not prioritize reforming this.

I was told by the Friend of the Court gal for our case that the court in our Michigan county required a bedroom per kid. It was a factor in the ex's decreased parenting time (he had money, just made bad decisions).

I've tried to tell people. No one wants to believe it. Family court is a mess.
