Disappointed by the sorry state of public schools? Then support compulsory public education through the 8th grade. The public is under no obligation to allow much less fund educational institutions or home schooling focused on segregation, racism, misogyny, or religious indoctrination.

People who want to home-school their kids or compel public funding for private religious schools are not exercising their 1st Amendment rights. They’re working to prevent others from securing their 14th Amendment rights. Nothing in the 1st Amendment prohibits compulsory public education.

It’s been Clear to me for decades, that Republicans’ strategy has been first to disparage public schools, then defund them. The final stage is to get parents to clamor for vouchers, which will be a transfer of government funds to private interests and a voucher will be base funding — never enough!
