We had a case in Washington where the grandmother saw disturbing writings and drawings and called the local law enforcement, they found a gun and his plans. Now he is some where getting the help he needs and no one was hurt. Parents, law enforcement and school failed these kids.

To be fair, many states have made strides in getting mental health professionals directly into public schools and more accessible. There is a good effort in some states, a lot of funding for it.

No joke… tried to get my kids into counseling this summer, they had their first appointments in Oct, and this was the shortest wait time of every one I called. I couldn’t believe it. Thank God it wasn’t an emergency!

Here in Ohio there are alternative schools. I personally have seen an uptick in students needing more intensive settings due to behavioral/mental diagnoses. I can’t imagine the home lives of the parents dealing with these issues.

Or, in some, the abuse suffered by the children at home. Many times, it’s generational. There is a reason these kids have access to guns. They come from families who are comfortable with implementing violence against others.

Typically the parents need to find them another school. But schools are allowed to no accept students if they pose a risk to the safety of other students. Alternative schools and mental health care is what’s needed, but that’s only in some states like California. In most, parents need to pay for it

Typically parents will fight to have their kid stay in school and this is what happens though. A lot of folks hurt because a few become parents that should not have. Parents need to have access to all that’s needed to parent before having kids. Mental health is a need here, and it’s very expensive.

In my state (Iowa) we have open enrollment. So if a kid gets expelled from a neighboring district, they’ll often wind up with us (we generally don’t expel; but we do transfer students to the alternative school or temporarily place them in online instruction).

In my area (southeast USA), if a student gets expelled for a weapons violation, they’re completely done with school for a year and cannot attend any other public school. They literally sit at home. They’d also likely be referred to our juvenile justice system.

Due to 40 years of republicans strangling public school & community resources, most areas don’t have a safety net. Everyone in that school knew about this kid, but what could they do? Probably no alternative school or even behavior program, probably no access to mental health services, & no gun laws

We had a middle school student who was outed for having “a list” and threatening to bring an air-soft rifle to school with modified bullets. He was suspended for two weeks, and is now back in school with all the kids he threatened. We have less than 400 kids in the entire MS/HS.
