Like I don't know gang, I think "Born This Way" was perhaps a historically necessary step, but we have ceded far too much ground to the idea that we are only this way because we don't have a choice.

If you gave me a choice to not be a trans dyke I'd spit blood in your face.

The first thing my therapist had to do to help me accept my transness was break down the idea that it NEEDED to be an innate, immutable, irrefutable and potentially measurable property and not something I simply wanted. I wasted so much time wondering if I Was instead of just Being. 2/

And I know SO MANY trans people who struggle bc they worry they aren’t “really trans.” I’d wager it’s a nearly universal trans experience, in fact. But if it’s ok to simply choose one’s gender then the point becomes moot.

And if we accept that there’s some inherent measurable control for being trans, what’s to stop oppressors from simply trying to eradicate that, instead? Oppressors want us gone, and they don’t care if they have to use brainwashing or eugenics to make that happen. 4/

When we insist on “born this way” to justify our queerness, all we’re doing is telling our oppressors that they need to use eugenics instead of brainwashing. That they need to “cure” us rather than “reeducate” us. But the core issue is that there is nothing wrong with queerness, period. 5/

We’re also tacitly saying that there’s validity to gatekeep our identities. That a doctor or geneticist or psychologist can or soon will be able to definitively say not just “yes, you Are” but also “no, you Are Not.” But queerness shouldn’t need permission to exist. 6/

If someone feels happier living as a different gender from their AG, they should be able to do so without consent and validation from some authority figure. We should all have the right to self-expression and bodily autonomy. 7/
