I have a mint condition pair of AKG K702s made in the Vienna, Austria factory in 2009 before Harman closed it and moved production to China. Got them new, sealed box in an eBay auction last year. Truly a piece of audio history. AKG is dead, long live AKG. #headphones #AKG #audiophile
Not being a VR guy I had no idea that the Index used BMR, very cool! It would definitely rule if these made a full comeback in the sort of way that planars have in the past 15 years
Yeah, the audio on that is kinda a miracle design wise. The drivers were directional and floated over the ear to make it so you could hear your environment while in VR and wouldn't overheat. The fact that the driver didn't bleed into the mic was wild unto itself.
I SO wish it were possible to get a headset like the one you show here - they’re a remarkable design feat, and I wish I could use them on other devices.
I just received a pair of ATH-EM7x from Ali and they look, feel, and sound genuine (in short, they rock). Might be worth checking out if you’re curious and missed the boat on getting them direct from Audio-Technica.
Pretty sure they’re newly manufactured. A sticker on the cable claims it was made in August 2024 in Taoyuan, Taiwan, which seems to match up with where AT has a factory:
