I keep telling my doctors I need a summer in an Italian villa to treat my chronic (stress-related) migraine, but they keep telling me to try different drugs instead.
I feel like this is supposed to be a gotcha but the answer is working class to rich. People often stayed with freinds or friends of friends so if they could manage the cost of passage they would often be able to hang around on hospitality/companionship/charity for weeks
Also getting ill from wearing wet socks and having to stay in bed with the fire nicely stoked, being fed hot soup and being read to for about …oh, two weeks.
I don't think this ever remotely disappeared.
The issue is that 25% of people can't even afford a $500 surprise expense, let alone a trip across the world for their health.
Most people can't even afford Healthcare for their health.
Restore the middle class, and this will return seamlessly
