The parallels are striking between the anti-vax ecosystem and its use of questionable studies and outside-the-medical-consensus scientists and doctors and the ecosystem built around denying the benefits and exaggerating the harms of gender affirming care for trans people.

Yes. This was the hubris at “the end of history” for liberals & an allergy to making persuasive arguments on the ideological left because material interest are supposed to be self-evident and identity (based or building) appeals somehow separate from “real” politics.

I really wish more people on my side of politics agreed. Way too many of us can't imagine that people with whom we interact on the regular actually need to be persuaded to agree with us and politics. And we've built some structures that actively inhibit that.

Of course. A resonant frame is one that combines a culturally relevant background belief with a linking concept and a new idea. Eg. It’s unfair for boys & girls to compete, trans kids are really their gender assigned at birth, excluding them from trans isn’t discrimination but ensuring parity.

If this gets repeated over time and linked to other related frames anxiety producing frames that decenter bigotry,equality,wellbeing etc. of trans folks it can shift opinion even for people who don’t consider themselves anti trans because it changes the relevant value for decision-making.

Resonant frames can be in regards for any kind of issue. They do not have to be popular frames in the first instance. They have to be easy to repeat, coherent, and capable of absorbing related associations so they become short hands freighted with meaning.

Nah, they have to carry a new idea (& link it to a background belief or value). Thought terminating cliches by definition do not carry new ideas they stick you with an old one & pretend it’s the only possible one.

Queer movements were able to use resonant frames(& a variety of political tactics)to transform the environment for gay people&issues between the 1990s-2000s.But the responses to attacks on trans folks were less coherent&vigorous than they needed to be to repel highly organized and coherent attacks.
