I’m at a loss to understand why the farmers don’t simply transfer title to their children before they die. As long as seven years have passed then no inheritance tax would be payable. If this is about passing a family farm on to the next generation then surely that’s a very simple solution for most.

For years, orthodox advice to farmers has been ‘don’t retire, pass the farm on tax free’. That suited the inherent conservatism of the sector.
Now the advice (for larger farms) will be to plan for earlier succession, which is what any other competent business owner does.
