It's a bit shallow to say this, but I suppose Madden has pre-empted such an accusation by stating his trigger was a shot he took in 2005. And that's perfectly fair. On the other hand, do sources of misty light constitute a genre? In which case, is everyone plagiarising Saul Leiter?

I don't really think so.

One could argue that they all look the same in the way that every picture in a stained glass window looks like any other, but when you look closely you see that's not the case. As here, I suspect. The photos will eventually be judged one by one.

Is it a genre, a style, or a technique? And while any such can be copied, does that necessarily imply plagiarism?

It’s the combination of style and methodology that makes me think it’s plagiarism. It’s not just one photo but the whole approach and look of it.

Plagiarism implies intent, and you may be right. I don't think similarity of outcome is enough to go on for that to be so, but methodology maybe.

I had not heard of Nick Turpin's project before this, but this statement is rather narrow and defensive against allegations of intentional copying of Turpin's photographs. A more generous response might have been more effective. Standing on the shoulders of giants perhaps?
