One thing that I will say about Parr’s work is that some middle class critics seem to believe that they have a God-given right to express outrage on behalf of working class people, without ever asking them what they think. It’s patronising and this mindset pervades most aspects of art/photography.

Ice cream parlour in New Brighton from The Last Resort by Martin Parr. It is a series which always polarises opinion and I’ve expanded on this in the Alt Text. Love him or hate him there’s no doubt that Parr has been one of the most influential photographers of his generation.

To me that sums up the situation.
The assumption that the subjects of his pictures taken in New Brighton, for instance, would or should be ashamed or embarrassed by the pictures is deeply patronising - and, I think, simply wrong.
