All the downsides of a dystopian future where capitalism runs unrestrained but none of the cool VR or digital world stuff to lose your mind in while your body dies
She could do the same fucking thing tomorrow and at least half of them would jump on as hard because they'd think they knew the play and could pull the same trick she just did.
Inherently, the punters also know it's a scam too. They just think they're smart enough to get on the right side of it.
As penance for past sins, I always confess that as a kid, I thought Stand on Zanzibar would be about epic space battles and a "last stand" worthy of Heinlein, Olaf Stapledon, and E. E. Smith. 😅
(And for some reason I read The Sheep Look Up first, but I can't recall why!)
Something about Brunner's style and/or outlook resonated with me in undergrad, so I read a bunch of his novels. The above two, plus The Shockwave Rider and The Squares of the City still stand out for me.

I reread them years later, and decided they're great. But still unbelievable.
