I’m not convinced the decks I make for myself would make good precons.
But I am in the process of, for my own amusement, trying to build great precons to teach folks with, which feels like what Foundations precons should have been.
A friend has a Doran deck that’s been a pride and joy for umpteen years. They picked up the whatsherbutt precon for content purposes and they were the most ://///// I’ve ever seen on a human face
i emerged from my pdh hovel to build a mono white energy commander deck and came to the conclusion that it needed to exist in spite of all the recent energy precon stuff actually -- all about finding those weird angles
I'm worried that my Vazi "sac all my lands and cast Spiteful Repossession" build is going to have this problem later this year when Edge of Eternities drops.
The opposite happen to me this week when building this guy, the precon barely works with him as the commander and is more expensive than the deck I ended up making
“Our market research shows that people like not having to work for anything ever. Therefore, everything is stapled to commanders, making it easier than ever before for players to turn their brains off while beating other players’s brains in!”
i think the only time i ran into this was my mothman deck, a precon that I've upgraded, only to find precon teval does what I want but better, though they are both different enough to both feel unique with similar mechanics. as for my other decks, no 4c landfall precons, or azorius spellslinger tmk
My favorite commander deck is a Simic morph deck with Ezuri, Claw of Progress. By putting +1/+1 counters on the morphs, I create a guessing game in which my opponents can't quite be sure what threats I'm creating for them.
I refused to change over when C19 gave us Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer.
stg at first I misinterpreted this as about building a wooden deck in one's back yard, and I was like "ooh like prefab ones? maybe I should look into that"
My man, I spent like a month of twice a week play sessions trying to make Doran the Siege Tower work as a toughness matters commander, then they printed this Felothar. I am still livid.
Shiko and Narset Unified too, because it's what I was trying to do with Jeskai Gandalf but just better because it's an immediate copy instead of having to wait 3 turns or play with time counters!
I can't be mad at precons, they are great for onboarding new players.
But this is the exact reason why I'm a bit miffed about them and will proudly say that they're super not for me.

I took my apart the day they announced it.
Mine had 5 more eldazi and 5 less angels.
- WotC, probably
And then there’s super defender Felothar who just laughs in the face of every Abzan Butts commander/partner pair ever printed.
I’m joking, I never got used to it.
I refused to change over when C19 gave us Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer.
And it's *really* annoying when it's happened twice
Sincerely,
A queer with a Morophon deck and an Okaun/Zndrsplt deck
