Once things get really REALLY bad, Trump will need a scapegoat, and Elon is the obvious choice.

Plus I think Trump will eventually figure out that Elon conned him, and hasn't saved much money. This will make him mad both because he wants to claim the savings, and because a con hated being conned.

Which brings up the whole "Trump will just pardon everyone" thing. You'll probably only get a pardon if you are still around at the end of the term, and are still in Trump's good books. And history shows us that it is not easy to stay on Trump's good books over time.
