However, I'd also say that there are developmental periods where it is *much* easier for brains to learn things. Squandering those isn't permanent but it is a huge cost for the individual. Yes they can learn later, but will they if it's so much harder?

They're not rotting your brain though. They simply provide another excuse not to exercise said brain.
