Congratulations to all those in the UK legal field who are about to discover just how complicated the term 'biological' can get

Votes for 16 year olds: the scientific argument open.substack.com/pu... Having recently been asked to discuss this on live radio in 'awkward' circumstances, here are some scientific arguments in favour of the lowering of the voting age #vote #teens #politics

Votes for 16 year olds: the scientific argument theneuroscienceofeve... A lot of the arguments against it basically boil down to "they do knife crime!" But unless you believe nobody over 18 has ever done a crime, this claim falls apart when you think about it for even a second

Votes for 16 year olds: the scientific argument theneuroscienceofeve... I am informed this was just discussed on LBC. Presumably without significant adherence to logic and scientific rigour, so I'm sharing it again. #Politics #Voting #Teens #Age

...people know that women have been going into space, as actual qualified astronauts, for decades now, right? I mean, I've even met one in person. I'm not imagining this.

I'm tucking this in my pocket for later - I've talked to literally thousands of people about politics and the idea that age and wisdom correlate is clearly nonsense. And as I tell every young person, if you want politics that represents you, you need to vote (and stand for election!)

This, again, today. But, Powerpoint. Which was somehow worse. Despite being the same.

Smartphones 📱 and the internet 🌍🕸️ help people aged over 50 stay smarter for longer, a meta-analysis shows 🧪 An interesting finding in relation to the current hysteria over 'digital dementia' 🧠 With comment from @garwboy.bsky.social www.newscientist.com/article/2476...

My brain: "The name of this guy we just met and are still talking to? Sorry, wasn't listening. And if you ask him again I'll trigger weapons-grade embarassmemt" Also my brain: "You know the music from level one of the 1990 Donald Duck Mega Drive game 'Quackshot'? That's today's soundtrack. Enjoy!"

Why does this thing exist? (Podcast) Episode 144: “Beak on the box” shows.acast.com/why-... Dean complains about recipes and Simon talks about his charity work. Then, Simon tells Dean about a new shop he’s been to and the interesting thing he bought, and they slander a cereal #Podcast #Humour

Today I saw a library post an AI meme they’d made. A frigging LIBRARY. It’s fine to be complicit in AI destroying other creative industries, just not your own, hmm?

"AI art is bad for so many reasons and should be avoided at all costs... unless it allows me to take part in a quirky social media trend. Then it's fine." - A surprisingly large number of people

I’ve never seen a tweet that more effectively communicates how we got to this current situation

The hidden flaw in cryonics that could ruin your shot at living forever www.sciencefocus.com... The idea of freezing yourself for later resurrection is tempting to many, but there are too many hurdles, especially in the brain, for it to be feasible just yet. My latest for Science Focus magazine

What did dopamine do to deserve this? cognitivewonderland.... A guest post I did for tommy Blanchard's Cognitive Wonderland blog, about the surreal vilification of a vital neurotransmitter, and how this is having negative consequences for us all. #Dopamine #Addiction #Neuroscience

Despite what Google's AI might have you believe, @garwboy.bsky.social is not actually pro-nuclear war. New on our Substack from Dr Dean Burnett - thecosmicshamblesnetwork.substack.com/p/no-ai-i-do...

What did dopamine do to deserve this? New guest post by @garwboy.bsky.social on the unfair demonization of a neurotransmitter "Saying you’re addicted to dopamine is like saying you’re looking at your own retina: you can’t do that, it’s too fundamental to the process."

Do you like books? How about books about the brain? Well, you could a lot worse than buying one (or several) of the ones written by me. Why not get them from Blackwells? Lot's of discounts on offer from this venerable tax-paying seller blackwells.co.uk/boo... #AD #SortOf

The secret to a perfect morning routine probably isn't what you think www.sciencefocus.com... Given that 'high profile person promoting an utterly bats**t morning routine' is topical again, here's my Science Focus article on the psychology behind this baffling phenomenon #Routines #Success #WTF

If this offers something new and challenging in terms of casting and content, I'm intrigued But if it's just coopting a famous brand to give us more sanitised pap from the usual pre-approved lineups, no thanks Basically, as soon as I see the words "Jimmy Carr", I'm out

No, AI, I do NOT think nuclear war is a good thing open.substack.com/pu... Google's AI is telling people that I am in favour of nuclear war. Because of course it is. This reveals yet another problem with AI that makes things harder for us all. #AI #Media #Writing

Google’s AI has warped my work to an extent where it’s stating there are scientific benefits to NUCLEAR WAR! Which there aren't Given how a dominant nuclear power is now effectively run by gullible tech-loving sociopaths, a joke I made 10 years ago could wipe out humanity theneuroscienceofeve...

This photo really made me laugh, for reasons which are presumably obvious

YouTube star Ryan George recently did a video that flagged up how Google's AI says a Nuclear war would be 'beneficial' But AI didn't say that. *I* did 10yrs ago As a joke And now #AI is presenting this as fact. Which is bad Video: youtu.be/N2S2mtCOVCY Article: theneuroscienceofeve...

The dangers of #AI Theft of work? Yes Inaccurate, unusable content? Yes Causing a very popular YouTube comedian to tell millions of viewers that you're an advocate of nuclear Armageddon? ... in my case, yes. Nobody warned me about *that* outcome. So I'm spreading the word here

Excellent new blogpost from @garwboy.bsky.social on the difficulties current #AI tools have with satirical content. Reminds me of this superb @tomgauld.bsky.social cartoon.

I had 20 minutes notice for this. I had to do it live from my car parked outside the gym, sweating and winded from the rowing machine Ah, the glamour of media

The inability of "AI" to 1) distinguish satire and humour from reality and 2) say "no" when asked something patently stupid ("how can I treat measles with hot yoga" or some such question) is why I treat it with scorn.

Basically, while writers may be rightly concerned that #AI will steal our work and make everything worse, have you considered that it may also declare you to be the world's go-to source for advocating the merits of fiery global holocaust? Because I personally didn't see that coming

Inside each of us there are two wolves Both of them are saying: "mate, those aren't resurrected direwolves, they're just modern wolves with a few gene tweaks and a ludicrous amount of hype."

Admittedly, if you don't know the news story I'm referring to, this post must seem increasingly niche
