Brilliant clip, never seen them before.
I wonder how many people out there would get the jokes now, though.
Judging by the original post, I think I’m right to wonder, too.
So fun to remember. That skit was a real favorite of mine because I really love math, numbers, science, language, and other nerdy stuff. Oh and I adore my oxford comma!
statement: "Our hockey organization is the largest in the state with only one sheet of ice."
a) we're the biggest hockey org in the state
b) every org larger than us has 2 sheets
c) some orgs smaller have 2 sheets
d) every org smaller has 1 sheet
e) b & c
f) a & d
.. in a local FB group in a community that always votes 70-30 R, that statement raised a lot of confusion, with the majority of the commentors assuming something like A and arguing angrily that we did *not* have the largest hockey org in the state. Further explanation = deer in headlights
10% of 100 is 10
Subtract that 10 from 100 and you get 90
10% of 90 is 9
Add that 9 to 90 and you get 99.
I did the math for you in case you Republicans were confused why he put a 9.
But yeah to clarify I was trying to make a compliment 😅. MAGAts have shown they lack even the intelligence to admit when they don't understand something. Not understanding something isn't the problem, it's refusing to learn.
Yes, but unlike you Mr. “AK-47” up there has no intention of every trying to learn something new or have others learn it. He’s there so people of like “minds” can see his reply and reflexively say “HE’S RIGHT! IN YOUR FACE, YANG!”
Ok math was my greatest educational challenge so thank you for explaining this to a person who has never voted for a Republican in her life because I’m dumb but not that dumb. 😆😂🤪
“The market was down 10% this last week, it rallied 10% on Friday”. Not the same numbers, and it happens all the time. 40,000 - 10%=36,000. 36K + 10%=39,600.
was just about to make this point. If I had a dime for every time I had to explain to a customer why 25% off then an additional 10% was not the same as 35%.....even when you explained sometimes you got a blank look.
They probably completed it and graduated. I was in the "math for football players" class due to untreated ADHD, and they taught nothing. This guy seems like a product of that.
Yeah you *can* represent four states with two bits. But the number 10 doesn't. That's like saying that there must be 99 days in a month because 30 is a two digit number.
Certainly. But I noticed that in the decimal example you didn't count zero, while in the binary example you did. In either case it still doesn't explain why writing 10 (binary) would imply there must be four of something any more than writing 2 (decimal) would imply that there are 10 of something.
Even if - as you seem to imply later (I didn't read all of it) - you're starting to count at zero, that doesn't mean, the number 2 (aka binary 10) changes it's meaning.
It does in the specific case where you’re using a binary value to express the existence of a number of possible states. The number 2 doesn’t exist in binary. 2 is a decimal number.
The binary representation of decimal 2 is binary 10, which - because we count from zero, has three possible states.
But, if you’d read the thread you’d have seen I was simply being pedantic as a former mainframe programmer and gasping at the senseless waste of a bit.
unfortunately in college the teachers I got did not know math, I got annoyed with them keeping to say that the homework had questions where it can't be solved. We are not talking Physics problems but Trig 101 and algebra 2. Having a good math teacher is so valuable.
There are kids making those kinds of mistakes in school who will argue that the maths teacher is wrong & they are right! They will refuse to listen/watch your reasoning. They will eventually go out into the world blaming 'shit teachers' for their failure. 🙄 You can help MOST children, but not all.
In my school we did a thing where you sat with some disadvantaged pupils from the lower years while they learned to read. Now whenever I see a post from an antivaxxer or nationalist or similar fucktard I read it in 15yo Dave’s stilted hesitant voice
We are living in Idiocracy. Handjobs coming soon to a Starbucks near you. Tip: invest in Brawndo stock. It's going to become so popular we'll be watering crops with it!
Wish we were living in Idiocracy. The people of that world saw they had a problem they couldn't fix, so they sought out the opinion of experts, listened, implemented the fix and it worked. Can you imagine trump doing something like that
Why do I get the feeling their next response would be/has been "You wasted years of your life on a piece of paper" and then proceed to ignore you? There's just no reasoning with these kinds of people -- assuming they're actually people and not bots.
I feel like basic math skills and common sense goes a long way (not to convince them though). Your MBA is just nuclear compared to them. Yet I suspect you run into a fair few who thinks Reddit theory trumps that...
I got written up for teaching cursive in my second grade class as a daily warm down before we went home . Brought into my principals office and lectured on the futility of spelling tests when there’s spell check..you think I’m joking.. I fought and survived NYC DEPARTMENT OF ED…
My kids attended Montessori schools & learned to write cursive first as young kids naturally draw circles before straight lines & were taught to read from printed books concurrently. Thus, they learned to recognize letters written both ways. They were reading & writing before they were 4 yrs. old.
lol..parents are gold .. especially when they do it right … Montessori is solid.. I trained with Katz n Chard .. project method Fontas and Pinell.. Aussies and New Zealand kick ass.. I miss the kids , classroom setups read alouds and Friday spin the vinyl, The Clash n Vivaldi and snacks
I'll bet you do! One of my best parental moments was nearly falling out of my chair when I realized my 3 yr. old son was ACTUALLY reading the Sunday paper comics aloud to me as he laid on the floor. I nearly spewed my coffee.
That logic would seem to suggest there is no longer any reason for reading, writing, or arithmetic at all — given the abilities of phones and the internet these days.
At what point do we scrap education all together and just hope for the best with the algorithms? 🫠
NYC -42% attrition rate for a teacher within the first 3 years. Now that’s across the 5 boroughs.. on average. But then you had Brooklyn like Brownsville or my area ..The Bronx.. more like 60%. The kids weren’t the major problem like most like to say. There was no support. Years from 1980s - 2020
I meant thriving for you to be able to move to a new role. To suggest schools themselves are thriving is far from my ability to appraise the situation over the past few years.
I have friends in more than one state who work as teachers, and consistently in what they share with me the stressors arise
We're there now. With LLMs theres no longer any reason for thinking. If you can speak your needs into a microphone, you're set. We're at the fast food drive thru stage of capitalism.
LLMs are terribly low quality sources of information without the media literacy to asses the quality of the information that’s provided and the awareness to prompt any LLM to cite its sources so that this can be assessed.
Drive thru food is still a pathway to an early demise.
I'm waiting for the day a kid comes into the lab and can't even do basic math because they're not allowed to have a phone, and the only computer in there runs Windows XP and isn't on a network.
Cursive is an accommodation for dyslexia, and doesn't "hurt" anyone. I taught 2nd graders too; they loved learning to read the "secret" writing of the adults. 😉 I am so glad I retired!
Well, if it makes you feel better, he wrote the calculations out incorrectly. 100-10 is not equal to 90+9. He should have split up the two calculations:
100-10=90
90+9=99
ask magas what a 200% increase to x is and and I wonder how many will double it. There's going to be lots of confused people at the dollar stores in red states.
Read something years ago about the number of people who treat "2x more" and "2x as many" as the same and I think it was close to half. Blew my mind. Now I just treat "x more" as if I've been given no info at all, unless I get the numbers it was derived from with it.
Ugh oh... I'm on the dumb side. 😵💫 To be honest though, I'm an over thinker who over-analyzes every word to the point of confusing myself and missing the point of most word problems. It's exhausting and futile.
confession: after the GW Bush "nuclear" gaffe I couldn't ever remember if 2 or 3 syllables...it messed me up for life -overthinking it, doubting myself
Maybe I should have assumed "spring forward" marked the beginning and "fall back" the end, but I could never remember if Daylight Saving was in the winter or summer until I learned they call it British Summer Time in the UK (at nearly age 50 😄).
I don't think it's dumb that a lot of people don't give this much thought when they're reading. Probably a good thing they're concerned with more important things. Just strange to me that journalists often use the phrase without recognizing they're saying different things to different audiences.
dem polticians and ALL journalists should be clear, give examples..curious & asked my 16 yo last night if "5 Below" prices increase %200 because tariffs what's it called now? Gladly..."15 Below" phew (but also obviously hoping for no Trump retail tax! )
I recently had some tech bro moron try to sell me on a Crypto standard for our currency. I explained the many reasons why this was a bad idea. He kept posting 2 graphs and basically saying “this is proof I’m right”.
The graphs didn’t measure the same thing, and didn’t apply to his point.
A ten percent decrease is recoverable by an 11% (actually an 11.1…%) increase.
100 - (100 x 0.10) = 90
90 + (90 x 0.10) = 99, not 100 even though the increase is 10%
90 + (90 x 0.111) = 90 + 9.9 = 99.99, not quite 100 since the actual value is 0.111…
This is one of the reasons that we have a horrible president. Even though he is a convicted felon who has had many businesses go bankrupt, he looked like he was okay on The Apprentice.
Ironically, that's part of the problem. Standardized tests create a paradoxical effect. Kids end up being taught how to take that test, and not much else.
well that only applies if you think of test as multiple choice only. Math tests in most countries require that people show the work. But this need heavy investment in Teachers and schools. none of that independent school district stuff.
There’s a difference between simply not knowing and the proud ignorance of the populist that sees the educated as untrustworthy, schools as engines of social destruction, and believe their ignorance is better than a PhD.
Have to say that I really thought if I looked at this on Twitter there would be evidence one or both of them were talking about how a "transitory" drop in the market would present, but nah, looks like the dumbest incorrect correction of an abstract math explanation over there too.
They want to gut the education department so that we become even more “less” educated than they already are. The dumbing of America has already been started, no need to gut education even more.
Yeah…I kept looking at it confused. It seems like in this case, it’s a matter of bad/unclear mathematical language on his part? Like… This is exactly the kind of thing that messes up my brain tho lol. I would go with 10% and 10% are equal, forgetting that 10% of the lower number *is* lower by ratio.
But like I said. This kind of math I can’t quite wrap my brain around and I always feel really stupid so someone might explain it in a way that makes it make more sense to my dumb math brain. 😅
Few in the U.S. outside of education realize causes for lower test scores.
1. The test scores for Special education students are included with all gen ed. scores in each state.
2. All second language students are included in the full standard test scores of each district/state. So not fair to anyone
AI - The American education system is complex and faces many challenges, but it also has strengths. Whether it's considered a failure depends on individual perspectives and priorities. Addressing the challenges WILL lead to a more equitable and effective system
Again, you are a huge dipshit. “AI” doesn’t do anything useful unless your idea of education is setting old growth on fire and accelerating climate apocalypse.
There’s a lot of data showing national declines in K-12 standard assessment measures, as well as significant gaps in US vs peer countries. Of course there are pockets of exceptional school districts (mostly in HNW communities because property tax funds schools), but overall we are failing our kids.
So the point is, if the market goes up and down repeatedly, even if it comes back by the same percentage every time, you’re losing money at every cycle.
You joke, but anti-intellectualism is a very real component of authoritarian regimes. Cambodia is only just now recovering from a purge of intellectuals that happened 50 years ago.
Yes, I know who he is. I also don't think of him as much of an expert as he is just a centrist and an opportunist with a law background rather than an economics one. I'd hope more people would have learned the lesson from Musk to be wary of self-described expert technocrats, but alas.
The math looks correct on the surface.
(Different numbers, same principle)
If you have $100 and lose 50%, you are left with $50.
If you gain 50% at this moment (50% of $50 is $25)
$50 + ($50 x 50%) = $75
I still don’t think Andrew Yang is a person to listen to for government policies.
A&W introduced a 1/3-pound burger to compete with McDonald's Quarter Pounder, offering a slightly larger burger at the same price. However, many customers incorrectly assumed that 1/4 of a pound was more than 1/3 of a pound... Merica!
Nah. There weren’t that many locations, relatively, anyway. 2008 is how Fuddruckers died, though there are 60 locations still open after Black Titan Franchise Systems bought it in 2020.
In a weird turn of events, the private equity company is the reason there are still 60 locations open. I agree that it’s usually the case that PE kills chains. This is one of the exceptions.
Like the 12oz pound of bacon at the store, corporate America’s new math. Previously a 16oz pound of bacon was 3.99, now a 12oz package is 3.99, package size the same dimensions as the 16oz. Confuses the purchaser, appears the same without looking at the weight. The 16oz is now 5.49, it’s a rip off.
you would think
BUT
a burger chain stopped offering a 1/3 pound burger because nobody would buy it . . . sales of their 1/4 pound increased because people literally thought the 1/4 was BIGGER than the 1/3
Mathematically the OP is correct. But, if we're talking about a tax, which is added to the cost, removing and adding the tax doesn't impact the original cost.
How many grade schoolers had a similar question on one of their math tests? I admittedly got it wrong, once, on the test. Learning used to be considered an academic success.

Can we also mock andrew yang for being so lazy to use equal signs like that?
Like...100 - 10 = 90 + 9 = 99 is just silly to write.
I shouldn't complain though, I voted for him once.
If there are 30 days in a month there must logically also be a 1st thru 29th for the 30th to exist.
The binary representation of decimal 2 is binary 10, which - because we count from zero, has three possible states.
I was always in advanced math classes and didn't know people were really this fucking dumb.
Even when i helped kids in other math classes, they eventually got it.

And the walls are a freaking Faraday cage.
I swear there's a TI exec somewhere high up in the chemistry hierarchy making sure this gravy train doesn't run out.
Not because of the DE but because education has been underfunded in America for the past 30 years.
100-10=90

Calling our education system of failure is a MAGA agenda

Me. Destroying it Won’t Work !!
You should probably go find different social media. You would do better there.
However, it is an excellent documentary!
You now, one a them edumicated types thinks they know more thin you.
Prolly went for collage and makin over minimum wage, woke mf’s

you couldn't make this up if you TRIED
american education for the win
so many levels.
2. OP wasn't talking about tax(es), rather the markets and the losses/gauns people had this week
he was talking 10% of someone's 401k is known. he used a base of 100 to make his point.
Her pro tip: draw out 90 circles in groups of 10.
then ran upstate ny to summer home during 2020
wife makes the bucks
true leadership
That's a real disconnect.
100 - 10% = " anyone? Anyone" 90
90 + 10% = where you started right????
I'm going to leave now and scream into a pillow whilst stabbing myself in my thigh as a distraction from the stupidity.
