I was simultaneously devastated and also just a little relieved that they broke up because it was getting harder and harder to overlook how badly Stipe’s lyrics had regressed. Musically I love the record but some of the lyrics are glaringly corny.
I don't think any lyricist that's around for decades and have written 15 albums write the same way they used to. I think the cornet element was something they were happy to embrace. When you've written masterpieces like Find the River or Night swimming its hard to try topping that
I forgot that the Baseball Project was born in the late '00s. They're fun (I saw them a few years ago)--basically rock that's a vehicle for songs about baseball. Scott McCaughey and Steve Wynn do most of the singing, but Mike Mills is lead on a few (Peter plays guitar now that Mike's on bass)
I think I got a little put off my oh my heart due to the Houston connection but I quickly learnt you love it. Sure the song even addressed it "Hear the answer and call, hear this song, rearranged"
