Does anyone practically know how adults came to be so neglected during neurodivergent screenings? I’m so curious what actual history led to the discrimination.

I had an early ADHD diagnosis. During my 20s bipolar was added and my late 20s schitzo affective was added. Trauma from childhood abuse and previous diagnosis kept them from noticing my autism until tela health and I was able to unmask. I am hyper verbal and high masking autistic.
By the criteria of autism when I was a kid in the 80's I wouldn't have it. It was missed until I was 39 well after the autism spectrum was better known. Even with that it took a therapist that had experience and education about autism.
One of the therapists I was going to see after said to my face in the first appointment that autism and ADHD were not real. So poorly educated/ biased mental health care workers play a factor in it too.
A nurse told me "everyone has autism these days" when I mentioned I suspected it.
I no longer suspect. Apprehensive to get diagnosed, but a recent experience made me realize just how much missing social cues and implied meanings makes me vulnerable.
I doubt you’re naive! Often a lot of us have had our entire lives gaslit so much that we’ve completely lost trust in our perception of the world and social interactions…leading to mixed messages and missed social cues 1/2
Or often we are hyper attuned to how many different ways things can be interpreted that it can be hard to know what perspective to trust. I think it’s much more nuanced than just being naive. Don’t rush to judge yourself! 2/2
Ok but a granny doing self defence is the most badass thing. You have all my respect omg
And yeah if you still have that itch, it might be worth researching masking in older autistic women and find a therapist who has specific knowledge in that 💜
That’s such a fkn let down. And yeah there are still SO many therapists out there who will tell clients not to get assessed only because they don’t want them to have the autistic/adhd label. So much of my work is spent destigmatising autism/adhd to therapists so they stop traumatising my clients
That’s such a huge journey you’ve been on holy crap! I have no idea whether this is the case for you or not but I’ve heard of so many situations were people get misdiagnosed with things like BPD when it was just autism the whole time

At 53yo, I shouldn't be so naive 😕
Scary a granny can be so clueless about when men's intentions are sexual in nature. Starting self defense classes soon.
Accepting that I am autistic allows me to learn better self care. Makes a huge difference!
She is on blue sky as well. I met her back when I was on threads and had lots of helpful advice
This channel may be helpful. I definitely understand missing social cues and how frustrating it can be and how dangerous
