The story of Amazonia keeps expanding. Archaeologists excavating monumental centers in west-central Amazonia believe they held a million or so people in ~150AD. (Story in Portuguese, but Google Translate will give you the gist of it.)

A guy I know commented, "This is literally big if true." He's correct. IMO, these folks make a real plausible case but it will be really important to learn something about where all these people lived--the centers themselves don't seem to have been occupied.
Arrgh, dumb goof. The article is in Spanish, not Portuguese. I was thinking about the places being in Brazil, which speaks Portuguese, plus the archaeologist Alceu on the team, whom I know, speaks Portuguese, and... anyway, the article is in Spanish.
