I honestly don't think he would have wanted to profit from that, nor did he deliberately seek to do wrong. He screwed up and tried to backpedal. Foolish, maybe even naive, stuff.

If he sold them after becoming a councillor, it suggests that he would've been happy enough to still have them today if he hadn't been elected.
