(whispers) there's absolutely no reason to ship an entirely new OS every year, never mind six of them, and this approach only cements their intent to do just that, which stinks!

You’re right, and because of this every year timeline, the last few years of iOS have been frustratingly buggy until the last .x version before the new big feature update. Being forced to choose between features and stability every September is wildly frustrating
car models are numbered after years and that makes sense, because most people aren't upgrading every year, due to cost and logistics. apple assumes you'll upgrade your OS every year so why does the OS need to be numbered accordingly?
