It really is, and that’s the issue managers/ politicians may just see them as a number on a waiting list, but these are real people with their entire lives on hold. Just because a condition is benign or non cancerous doesn’t mean it can just be delayed and delayed without consequence

What can we do about this? I can guarantee it’s not for lack of enthusiasm from surgeons. So many of us would be only too happy to sign up for extra surgical lists, to operate on weekends or evenings. We don’t have enough opportunity for surgical training so this would be ideal. What’s the issue?

Funding. If you want to clear the back log, you are going to need to pay. Just like during the pandemic the government paid to offer surgical lists that the NHS performed at private hospitals we need to pay properly for nurses, ODPs, anaesthetists, surgeons as well as theatre space.

Another issue? Efficiency. The lists we do have are terribly ineffcient. Long delays between cases. Cases cancelled on the day because of not being prepared appropriately (bloods, medications etc). If our lists worked better we could get through more cases with no extra cost. What do you think?
