The mergers and the variable map make it my favorite currently. Also that it’s a set number of turns, rather than endless op rounds until the bank breaks.

That is my number one pet peeve about most 18XX. Never really sure that the last 2-5 OR are really necessary/make a difference in ranking (ie, who comes first/second/etc).
I'm willing to have a margin for error. Is this game still generating value? No? Stop, reset, play again. I don't have a utility function for completed games. I do have one for value.
It really depends. I find the last set of ORs important but often without choices in a majority of games. With a pencil and paper often it only takes 20 minutes but it's still 20 minutes of bookkeeping. Of course some have really dynamic end games (1860, 1817, Old Prince, etc)
Maybe it's just the group I used to play with, but it was never the case when we played 1860 and 1817. Sure, the difference in money/gap between the players would change, but not the final order
I have limited exp, just played my first 18xx in Nov in San Diego. But now I've played 46, 30, 61/67, and this one. I liked 1846 better than 1830, less focus on dumping and stock manipulation. And I really like the nationalization part of 61/67. Atlas is the one I'll try to get the family to play.
