Wizardry and Ultima gave us RPGs as we know them. Even JRPGs owe their existence to them.

Heck, one of the first first-person games was an Ultima game so ahead of its time it could do things even Doom couldn't despite coming out at the same time.

there's layers and layers but if you go far enough back, there is a direct throughline between FF14 and DnD. DnD was huge in japan in the 80s. record of lodoss war, anyone?

to add on, ff1 ripped off a bunch of stuff straight from D&D. there are straight up beholders, a lich, and illithids in there, as well as vancian casting.

Technically, no, there isn't Vancian casting, because that refers to the system of memorizing spells in advance which you can only store so many of, and then "expending" them when cast. Spell Levels weren't actually part of magic in Dying Earth, which is where the name comes from. Also, FF3 also -

Like, Wizardry was heavily inspired by DnD 2E, and influenced JRPGs, including FF. JRPGs *in general* kinda liked other mythologies and DnD monsters, including FF.

There is significant overlap but one defining aspect of blobbers that i dont think applies to DRPGs is that you control an entire party acting as a single "blob" (hence the name - think M&M6, Wiz8, etc) whereas AFAIK in DRPGs you can have single characters and/or allow party control during combat.

Fun fact: the JP remakes of the Western Wizardry games for various platforms are often considered the definitive versions among fans because of how much care and effort went into them. (We still miss Wizardry Online)
