What is it about advanced stop lines at traffic lights that some drivers don’t understand? Just reported driver for breaking the law, even though they had plenty of time to stop at the correct stop line.

In the UK, there is a visible signal at the other side of the junction. When we drive we just need to know and apply the Highway Code. The police action will make their offence clear.
We need all forces to raise their enforcement standards to that of the best. We need police who understand that enforcing the law lowers road harm and encourages cycling and walking.
That would be nice, unfortunately Essex Police didn't learn after they were taken to court for failings in dealing with domestic violence to women. So their lack of enforcing road laws comes to no surprise.
Reported loads of these to West Yorkshire police, with clear evidence of going into the ASL with time to stop. They're not interested or don't know the rule. 😤🤦♂️
I've just received police feedback on this offence:
"I have reviewed the footage and issued the registered keeper notice of intended prosecution (NIP) for the offence: Motor vehicle fail to comply with endorsable section 36 traffic sign - other than manned or automatic equipment"
I’ve often been tempted to report, but often it’s just something I’ve witnessed without it hampering me, so I wondered if the police would bother to follow up.
Sadly, the only way to get compliance with ASL is for others to report. There is unevenness across forces on action, but it is a straight-forward offence. We're all witnesses in the road crime reporting system. It's worth trying and seeing what your force does. Mine always issues a NIP.
Because we are allowed, when we drive, to stop in the bike box if we were in the process of crossing the junction when the lights changed. The assumption is that it is safer to remain in the box than jump the red light. That's a well-founded assumption.
Or drivers, who after passing you earlier down the road deliberately position their car at traffic lights in such a way that you cannot pass them on your bike and are forced to breathe in the exhaust fumes of a long line of waiting cars.
This seems likely. Divers regularly push past any stop line at traffic lights, which seems to be part of the same psychology. Lights are perceived as impediments to the forward motion that cars are seen to provide. They are actually part of the infrastructure that seeks to make us all safer.
